How To: Use Multiple Signatures In Gmail

As you may know I’m an avid fan of using Gmail’s web interface, despite peoples best efforts to get me using Mac OS-X’s Mail application. One thing I have been envious of for a while is Mail.app’s ability to insert a signature of choice at a click of a button.

Gmail

Thankfully, there is relatively simple solution to using multiple signatures in Gmail! You may be asking why I would need a magnitude of different email signatures? Simply put I use my Gmail account to send and receive email from over ten email addresses. So for example if I’m replying to a work email, I would like to use a more work orientated signature, including with it my work email address, where as when replying to personal emails I will want to use another signature, possibly with a link to my own site.

How to get it done

  • Head over to the Settings page, in your Gmail account. Then open the ‘Labs’ tab,
  • Enable the Canned Responses feature. (CTRL or CMD + F to find it quick!)
  • Once activated, go and compose a new message.
  • In a blank email write out your signature.
  • Use the Canned Response menu to save your signature. Giving it a name such as ‘Personal Signature’ is advised.
  • Repeat this process for each signature you desire.
  • When writing emails, simply select the signature you would like to use from the drop down Canned Responses list.
  • Done!

This is something that had been bugging me for a while, so I was pleased to find such a simple solution.

Notify – Cool Gmail Notifier

Yesterday a friend pointed me in the direction of Vibealicious’ Notify, a really neat clean alternative to Googles own Notifier. The application Notifyis for Mac users only, and all you need is a Gmail account.

Notify works in a very similar way to the official Google Notifier, but has some added touches that sets it apart for me. It has Growl notifications built in, along with support for multiple accounts via a tab interface, and an overall better user experience for quickly getting a glance at whats in your inbox. You can set the the app to check for new mail at a number of set intervals, and I have mine set to check every minute.

Of course a lot of Mac users will opt to use the Apple app ‘Mail’, but for those that just can’t break the habit of using Gmail on the web then Notify is a slick solution to knowing when you’ve got mail. If you give it a go, be sure to let me know your thoughts.

Good Connection News!

Finally! I have finally been given a date as to when my Broadband will be connected, and its just under 4 days away. My connection will go active on the 19th, which is pretty much a month since I moved, which is frankly ridiculous but hey it’s nice to finally know when things will all be connected!

Once the connection is active normal blogging will resume here at ChrisBrandrick.com along with new opportunities to get your site reviewed or advertised here, so keep a look out for that. In the mean time if your interested in advertising on my blog the 125×125 spot on the right sidebar is soon to be available at a cost of $17 USD’s a month, so if you want in or just want to ask any questions get the early bird email to me now at: chrisbrandrick@gmail.com. It will be nice to return back online to a few emails from my readers!

See you on Monday!

Contact Page Added

This seems crazy, but today it hit me that I didn’t have a contact page on my blog! So as you can now see in the menu above a contact page has been added, and on it you can either contact me via email or via instant message on MSN if I am online.

I am not 100% sure as to whether the MSN IM add on functions correctly, but for those of you interested in checking it out you can create your own on the Windows Live site.

Daily Lit

Recently a friend recommended an interesting little website, DailyLit is a simple site which through the power of email (and RSS) you can read a book of your choice. The site has a simple clean look and it just requires you to choose a book from the somewhat small selection, and sign up via email or rss, and then each day you will receive a chapter or section of that book.

The idea behind the site is that those that find themselves lacking the time to sit down and read and commit to a book can have it in easy daily chunks, and although the site is still ironing out some copyright issues to make more books available it seems like an interesting idea worth keeping an eye.

Check it out.
